Network Rack Cleanup FAQ
We moved to a new office, can we keep the wires that were already there? or do we need to run new cables?
In many office build-outs, existing cabling can be retained. We thoroughly test and verify each cable to ensure it meets current performance standards and supports today’s network speeds. We have helped many offices save huge on the budget but reusing as much cabling as possible.
Will we lose network connection during cleanup?
At some point yes. Network cables need to be unplugged but we will have a migration plan to keep you running as long as possible. This plan is different for every project and every client. Sometimes we are able to do the work at night or on off hours, restoring your network for the next days work. Of course our goal is always to minimizes the down time, and still gives you the best final results – a nice network IT Closet Cleanup.
Will you have to rerun any cables, or will you be able to just clean up the rack?
That depends on your goals for your rack, as well as the health of the cabling. Sometimes we do have to rerun network cables. As we start the process, we will investigate the quality of all the cables. This will involve testing each line. In the process we do often find at least some cabling that will need to be replaced. Due to the weight of the messy cables, it often pulls on the tabs, or pulls the cable out of the connectors. When that happens either repairs are needed or new cables will need to be run.
What are the benefits of doing an IT rack cleanup? Is it all about looks?
There are huge benefits to keeping a network rack clean, organized, and properly labeled. Trouble shooting is far easier when the cables are run neatly, and everything is properly labeled. The end user would be able to tell IT support on the phone what their jack label is, and they would know exactly where that is in the building, what room, what rack, and what switch port. Proper cable management allows the equipment in the rack to get proper airflow and keeps the machine cooler. When the network is messy, it draws others into being messy too. This means your problem exponentially grows over time. The weight of those cables tends to unplug data cables and power cords. This leads to further downtime while your team attempts to figure out why this server went down. Getting to the bottom of your network issues, starts with having a well-organized and neat network rack and IT closets.
What is the process for a network rack cleanup?
Every situation is it’s own unique challenge. But in general here is a basic workflow.A Site visit / Evaluation: Our trained team will come to your site, evaluate what your system is and what it needs.Network Test / Documentation: Once we start your project we will need to test and trace each wire, while we document our findings of where everything goes. This process can take time but it really helps to make sure it is all plugged back in correctly. Generate a Plan for the rack cleanup.GO TIME! Often, we see racks missing wire managers, or patch panels. Whatever is needed we will replace to give you the best quality installation.

Time and Materials - These could range from a simple cleanup that might only take a few hours, to some of these projects are multiple days, weekends, overnight hours. The cost of these clean ups really depends on what you have, how much you want to clean up and what you want it to look like in the end. How do you handle multiple MDF/IDF Locations, or building to building connections in this rack cleanup process?
We approach multi-rack setups with a comprehensive network map. Whether your facility uses a single Main Distribution Frame (MDF) connected to multiple Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs), or relies on multi-strand backbone fiber to link separate buildings, we trace and document the entire topology before touching a single wire.
To do this efficiently, we rely on you or your internal IT department to provide whatever network layouts or cable schedules you currently have—even if the paperwork is a little outdated. Existing documentation can be incredibly helpful as a baseline. However, if your business has no documentation at all, don't worry. In those cases, our team will trace out the topology and build the records from scratch, ensuring that when we leave, your entire network is fully and accurately documented.
During the physical cleanup, we focus heavily on these critical interconnecting links. We ensure backbone fiber patches, tie-cables, and transceiver links are neatly dressed, properly supported by correct cable management, and clearly labeled at both ends so your cross-connect routing remains perfectly seamless.
Is it better to just start over and run all new cables?
Not necessarily. If your existing copper or fiber lines are structurally sound, cat-tested, and meet modern speed requirements (like Cat6 or Cat6a standards), running completely new lines is usually an unnecessary expense. We prefer to test, validate, and label your existing infrastructure first. We only recommend running new cables if the older lines fail performance tests, are physically damaged, or if your business is expanding and requires additional drops to support new workstations or higher-bandwidth hardware, or in the situation where the pervious network room needs to be somewhere else, then, new wires would be required.
Can Rack Cleanups be done after hours, weekends, or holidays?
Yes, absolutely. We understand that commercial operations cannot afford daytime network disruptions. For businesses that operate on a standard Monday–Friday schedule, we can completely coordinate the cutover and cleanup during nights or weekends. Of course, that after-hours service does cost extra, but in the end, it might be better for the cleanup process and preventing any lost productivity. Our team will work through the off-hours to trace, reroute, and dress the rack, ensuring your systems are fully tested, online, and ready for your employees the very next business morning.
